Serious and detailed planning is the only way to be sure that you can have everything you need, already set up and ready for you, when you arrive. You must know your route inside and out, and you need a person to be with you in a car. Issues arrive and stuff happens. Avoiding carrying heavy luggage is important for cyclists.

You do need a shipping partner who can help you navigate the shipping methods to be used. Waybills need to be printed for all eventualities so that you can repack your bikes on the way home or simply move them to where you need them.
Proper bike packaging and insurance
Before you start your trip you need to be sure that your bikes will be packed securely to prevent damage during shipping. You also need to have the proper insurance and documentation for the long trip. You have to disassemble some of the parts and pack everything securely. You can use simple boxes from suppliers like Uline, or you can buy specialized cases at specialty stores. Easily identifiable labelling is also important.

Bicycling is not for everyone, and you have to be a fit and adventurous person to create a trip of such magnitude. It is not for everyone. I have a bicycle and as much as I admire the tenacity and the adventure-seeking idea, I prefer to enjoy camping with family and smores next to a campfire.
