What is the vision and the story of GMX Worldwide Xpress?
35 Years Ago
The GMX story begins over 35 years ago when a young Mr. Graeme White sets out to learn about the very secretive and complicated shipping industry. After a time he learns all the tricks of the trade and how things work. He quickly masters the hidden secrets of logistics and shipping. With this knowledge, he is able to find and create new business opportunities.
The shipping industry is serviced by a few logistics companies that have the power to dictate market rates. The older retail model is mostly about shipping by container or skids to larger retail distribution centers. Direct-to-consumer shipping of packages was not developed as it is now.
At this time, the small package market is being served by the likes of Canada Post, Fedex, UPS. etc. as well as a few local courier companies. With little competition or alternative services, courier companies are able to charge very high prices to everyone. Only a select few volume shippers are able to negotiate better discount rates with some carriers. Others are charged full published rates without any good discounts.
Graeme’s experience and knowledge are in general logistics and shipping, including large air freight, sea, and rail. In due time and after many years of training and work, he is inspired to find ways to help businesses ship their packages for less.
A New Idea for the Shipping Industry
There was a perceived demand in the small parcel business. So, Graeme took a big risk to open a 100% Canadian-owned and operated company for a brand-new market segment. In 2000 GMX Worldwide Xpress is born. Without a robust internet platform and by word of mouth Graeme starts his journey.
He has to:
• Gather many shipping customers who need small package shipments.
• Create a high-volume shipping business to allow for price discounts.
• Negotiate good discounts with carriers and pass the discounts on to his clients.
• Build a company through hard work with great service and integrity.
• Trust his many customers to commit to certain higher volumes of shipping.
How Things Really Started
GMX begins with Fedex. Graeme corralled new and old customers to be able to leverage the shipping volume from all of them. He offers everyone discounts based on his negotiations. Over time GMX’s volume increases and his negotiating position strengthens.
The internet changes everything
Today, with the advent of the internet and with a good website, it is now possible to offer all customers higher discounts for lower shipping volumes.
GMX today
Today, the addition of the easy shipping platform saves both time and money for everyone, big and small. We currently offer Purolator, Canada Post, UPS, DHL, and USPS on our shipping platform. Over time we will add new carriers and services. We also offer LTL (Less Than Truckload), container shipping and air freight and more.
The company is constantly searching to innovate and create a better user experience for everyone. Today the shipping DNA has been passed on to the next generation at GMX. Two of Graeme’s children are involved in GMX. Graeme is still very involved, and his sister is now also with the company. Management at GMX has a combined level of more than 85 years of experience in shipping. Everyone at GMX Worldwide Xpress knows shipping inside and out.
